I disagree about buying our self disposable plastic bags.If I am a shopkeeper,i strongly agrees as I can earn money by selling the disposable plastic bags. But if I am a costumer,I strongly disagree because when I buy things from some shops,I am giving them money. But,they wanted to earn more by selling the disposable plastic bags.I am sure no one want to spend more money on a disposable plastic bag.

I am not against the idea of not providing plastic bags.If I was a cashier i would would not give out disposable plastic bags but give out reusable plastic bags instead because it is worth buying an plastic bag that is reusable and cost about 60-90 cents depending on the size.

In my Opinion i think that there should not provide anymore plastic bags as plastic bags are not bio-degradable(I am not sure about this spelling)and will pollute Singapore water bodies such as rivers, reservoir, lakes, etc.
If i am a shopkeeper i will suggest the customers to bring their own bags(not plastic bags)as i will not have to buy lots of plastic bags and it will also be good to our environment.>.<

Dear Kuan Yu,

You have a point. As a customer, you do not mind paying more for a plastic bag. There are, however, some shopkeepers, who are more than willing to play a part in saving the environment. On the other hand, like what you have mentioned, there are some who would rather reach out to more customers and thus incur more cost to provide plastic bags for them.

I am for of not providing plastic bags.If i was an environmentalist,I will feel that they are not being Eco-friendly.I think the bags are non-bio gradable. Some of the people might keep taking even when they already have one. They leave it at home at not using it.I think they are wasting the plastic bags.

I am not against the idea of not providing plastic bags ,as people will take the free plastic bags for granted and after they finish using the plastic bags, they will just throw it on the floor and make the surroundings dirty .therefore ,if i was the cashier ,i will not provide plastic bags but charge the people whom need them, then the surroundings will not have any unwanted plastic bags lying on the floor

I am for the idea of not providing plastic bags. If I am an cashier, I will advised the customers to bring their own reusable bags instead of the plastic bags that we provide.
This way, we will help to save the environment. The reusable bags can be used to carry stuff not only for one day, but the plastic bags are only used for one day, after that people will throw away those plastic bags.

English Department BTPS said...

Dear Jolin,

Definitely! That is the main reason for many shops to opt for bringing your own bags.

Mdm Rozana

No,I am not against the idea. First, reusable bags can be used to put groceries, clothes and so on. If I am a customer I would personally bring my reusable bag to play my part. If i am a shopkeeper I would encourage customers to use a reusable plastic bag to save the earth. I would also charge them 20 cents for using a plastic bag as a mini fine. This way customers would not want to charged again and bring their own bags. After we throw your plastic bags into the dustbin or anywhere, people will have to get rid of it.Incinerating the plastic bag itself already adds carbon dioxide and leads to global warming, and who knows the earth will die because of our plastic bags? I would suggest for supermarkets to make a "No plastic bag day" or week like to let customers bring their own bags and play their part.

Glen ng[6a] said...

No,because providing plastic bags can reduce pollution.Costomers can either bring their own bags or buy one. Some of the costomers will throw the plastic bag on the floor.

I think I like the idea of not providing plastic bags anymore. It's much cheaper for us, as some shops charge us for the amount of plastic bags that we used.If I were a shopkeeper, I would not even buy and plastic bags to let my customers know that the next time they come, they must bring their own bags. If I were a customer, I would love the idea as I would not have to make so many trips to and fro carrying the small bags one at a time. :)

no i am not against the idea of not providing plastic bags.If I am a customer,I think Ikea is doing the right thing as when plastic bags are incinerated, harmful dioxins are released into the air and we might breathe in the harmful dioxins. But if the plastic bag are reusable, people can just buy the reusable bag and and bring it to Ikea everytime they shop there and they would not need to use the plastic bag.

I agree with not provivding free plastic bags . Because by doing so saves money by not buying it and i would be saving the enviroment ,thus saving animal lives.

I am for the idea as it encourages people to bring their own eco-friendly bag and not to depend on the shop to give them out for free. This will prevent the shop from having to waste money to buy the plastic bags.

I am not against this idea of not providing plastic bags to customers buying stuff from the shops,if I am the Shop owner,I would actually not give any plastic bags to the customers ,as I am saving the money for my bills and resources for the shop and I at the same time is doing my part on saving the earth to prevent extinction and global warming from happening.I think that the Government should make a no plastic bag week every month to prevent Global Warming and Extinction of animals to happen if it happens.

I think there are pros and cons about not giving plastic bag and giving plastic and not . The pros about giving plastic bag is that shoppers would't need to bring any recycling bag and it also convinent to shopper. The cons are that it will pollute the enviroment(i think bad for greenhouse gases). I am not against shop owners giving plastic bag because every time when i go out with my family i would not bring a recycling bag. :)

I think what Ikea is doing is correct. it makes more people remind themselves to always bring a reusable bag with them. If I was a shopkeeper,I myself will give a reusable bag and tell my customers to next time bring a plastic bag the next time they come here.

If I was a customer,I would go against the idea of not providing free plastic bags.I would not agree because last time,I did not need to pay for the plastic bags, but now I will need to pay an extra 90 cents for it.
However,if I was an environmentalists I would go for the idea of providing free plastic bags.I would agree because plastic bags take one thousand years for it to decompose, but if we do not want to wait for a thousand years,we would wave to burn it.The temperature for burning plastic bags would be one thousand degree celsius which will add to global warming and harm the Earth, causing the air to be warmer and melt the ice caps, rising the sea level, causing more floods in some places and droughts to other places.

Leo lim 5graciousness said...

I am agreeing to not providing plastic bags as it will harm the environment. Further more, producing them will produce green house effect and the surroundings will get warmer. But if I an a customer I would disagree as I would not want to carry a recyclable bag every where I go.

Wong Yu Shuang 5 Graciousness said...

I am for the idea of not providing plastic bags. If I was the customer, I would understand that Singapore needs to cut down on plastic bags, save the earth from global warming. We may just think, it is just one plastic bag. It will not make a difference if I buy one. But, in truth, if everyone thinks this way, it will not only lead to global warming, it will also pose dangers to marine life when they get into the sea. If I was a shopkeeper, I would raise the price for a plastic bag to prevent people from buying it, or maybe even not sell it. After reading this article, I have come to realise that although plastic bags are convenient to use, they are harmful to our Earth and have many disastrous causes.

Michelle 5Graciousness said...

I am for the idea of not providing plastic bags.
If I am an environmentalist I would think that this is an good action. Global warming caused drought, floods, and our tourist attractions all over the world to be slowly destroyed. If this continues, the sea level would rise, the ice in the North and South poles to be destroyed. On top of that, plastic bags also contribute to global warming! Singapore itself uses about 2.5 billion plastic bags annually. The whole world itself consumes 1 trillion plastic bags annually! Also, it takes 1000 years for plastic bags to be decomposed naturally. Are you sure you want to destroy our precious planet? We only have 1 and that how about the future generations? Are we going to destroy the planet and leave our descendants with such a dirty world?

Tan Owen 5 Graciousness said...

I am for the idea of not providing disposable plastic bags. Although Singapore has tried very hard to make sure it's citizens don't litter, providing them with free disposable plastic bags would not fix it, and would only make it worse. While free plastic bags are given at ease, it is even easier to simply throw the plastic bag onto the ground. Bear in mind that although Singapore is considered a 'Garden Nation', what would we be without our cleaners?
Giving out free plastic bags have too many disadvantages to list, which is why, from an environmentalist point of view, I am for the idea of not providing free deposable plastic bags.

Jaren Chen 5Graciousness said...

I am for the idea of not providing plastic bags. If I was a customer, although I think it is inconvenient to bring my own reusable bags, I would support the idea because if we use plastic bags, it would bring harm to the environment by polluting it, and by polluting the world means I would die too. If I was a shopkeeper, I wouldn’t want to spend more money on buying plastic bags. If I was an environmentalist, I would care so much about the environment and try to find more ways to encourage people to not use plastic bags. If I was a cashier, I would find it easier for them to bring their own bag, because I find it tedious to help them take the plastic bags.
I strongly am supporting the idea. I hope people support it too.

Hi i am Sindujah Nair....

I am for the idea of customers bringing their own recycling bags. Their actions will help to reduce the usage and need of plastic bags. Doing this will help the factories all over the world to save the usage of:
1. Manpower
2. Electricity
3. Water
4. Cheamicals required
5. Resources (plastic)
6. TIME

Reducing the usage and producing of plastic bags will perserve the ozone layers.

Currently, there are two Ozone holes; one over Europe and one over Australia.

These Ozones holes may inflict diseases like skin cancer which is very serious and other types of health problems.

The Ozone holes also create global warming around the world and extreme weather changes are occurring year after year, such as tsunamis, hurricanes, thunderstorm and many other freaks of nature..

Let's see if we reduce or better stop the usage of plastic bags, so that we will not fall prey due to the pollution in the air and all other related problems.

SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS!!!

THANK ! YOU!

If I were a shopkeeper, I would charge as much as ten dollars for a shopping bag. Most people would not want to pay that much for just a bag. I would be saving the earth by reducing carbon footprint.

Jolene Tay 5Graciousness said...

I am for the idea of not providing plastic bags. I am going to say why by writing on the perspective of a customer. If I go to a grocery store, for example, and they give me a plastic bag, I would most likely just throw it away after use. Yes, some people do reuse them but if we were to use tote bags, would not everyone be reusing it?
It does not just end there, if we keep on throwing plastic bags away, it would spoil the environment. Even if there was only one person not reusing, that would still affect the environment. Maybe not by a lot, but what if it accumulates? Not only that, what is the point of selling tote bags if no one were to buy them? Is not it better if we use the money maybe once or twice on the tote bag rather then hurting the environment?

Soh Jian Hao 5Graciousness said...

I am for the idea of not providing plastic bags. As a perspective of a shopkeeper i would be for the idea of not providing plastic bags as firstly plastic bags cost money and if customer use their own recyclable plastic bag the shop will save money as they do not need to buy plastic bags. Secondly some people, after they take out their things from the plastic bag and they will just throw away the plastic bags, this action will harm the environment and if everyone does this Singapore will become a dirty place.

This is siti- adawiyah, i think i would not use plastic bag as it is bad as we are using to much from the tree that the tree could go extinct and we could have nothing left.

I am for the idea of not providing plastic bags as I believe that more and more people are taking the free plastic bags for granted. By not providing free plastic bags, we are teaching people to be greener and bring their own bags when shopping. We can also teach them that they have to be responsible and plan what they have to bring instead of relying everything on Ikea to provide them with plastic bags.
As a customer, I will be against the idea of not providing plastic bags as it will be really troublesome for me and I may forget to bring bags along with me when shopping. Thus, I will have no choice but to waste my money on a plastic bag when I already have one.Using your common sense, who would pay for a plastic when they already have one
Therefore, I am for and against the idea of not providing plastic bags.

Clint Lim 5 Graciousness said...

On my opinion, I think I would be against providing plastic bags.If I were a shopkeeper, I would give them recycled bags if I have them or they would have to bring their own recycled bags.Everytime someone insists one having a bag when I do not provided them with one, I would lend them a trolley but with a security feature that informs me on which trolley has not been returned and whoit was who didn't return it.

I am against the idea of providing plastic bags.
From the view of an environmentalist, the earth is already sick, we should not harm the earth further. If we continue to use so much plastic bags, we will be harming the earth. We should save the earth not harm the earth. Using so many plastic bags will harm and pollute the earth, if we continue, our earth will be so sick that by that time we will not be able to even save our earth anymore. Some customers after using the plastic bags we just throw them away. Using reusable bags are better, we can use them over and over again and over again. Saving our earth is the most important.

Providing plastic bags is actually bad because people can just dispose the plastic bags anywhere thay like and it is hurting the enviroment. Also plastic bags were made from chemicals and when you dispose them animals might eat it and die from it.So that is why shop keepers, cashier from outlets encourage all of us to bring our own non-disposable bags after our shopping. Some shopping centre even charge each shopper for a plastic bag 20 cents! If you dispose the plastic bags properly, animals would not be harmed and also helps the enviroment. Recycle!

I agree that we should not provide plastic bags as they could pollute our country as in like after people use the plastic bags they would always take them out after they reach home and throw it outside the window or sometimes even throw in the river. As the signs always tell them that they should not pollute the world and always recycle but there will always be litterbugs all around.Normally we are told to recycle and always take charge of what we do so as to not pollute the country but the littering still goes on as they don't listen and whenever I see my siblings or cousins littering, I would always tell them to not litter and look for a dustbin or throw it when we get home/they get home.

I think that using plastic bag is like harming the earth . As nowdays ive realized that now IKEA are not using plastic bag but using proper shopping bags for customers who shop at IKEA. So far i think that IKEA is caring for our enviroment. As for me if i want to takeaway food ill just bring my personal containers for caring the enviroment and i suggest that for customers who want to takeaway . For plastic bags it can suffocate animals and make them die so i also feeel a little bit bad . To make the eviroment green we need to reduce , reuse and recycle. I think i should be recycleing plastic bags to make the enviroment green. I think we should not use plastic bags or using enviroment green bags . So i guess that using enviroment green bags is making the enviroment green also . Also plastic bags can reuse and make other thing too. So do your part to make the earth green and making the enviroment green too. by Max Svento 5 Adaptability Bukit Timah Primary School

I am with the idea not providing plastic bags as when thrown in lakes, oceans or rivers the sea creatures will swim towards it and think that it is food and the sea creatures will eat and choke. The other thing about plastic bags is that when a baby or a young child has a plastic bag it will think that it is a toy and will play with it and can result in the child suffocating and the child can die.
